The Distomo Slaughter 10.6.1944 Print E-mail

image010.jpgAn in depth sociological study, “The Distomo Slaughter: Memory, Politics and the Struggle for Closure”, by Nicholas Petropoulos, has been published on our website.  The study includes: (1) a  chronicle of events leading to the unprecedented massacre of  218 Distomo villagers (non-combatants) by the Nazi SS troops on 10 June 1944  (2) excerpts from the narratives of survivors  (3) a typology of German soldier reactions (4) an exploration of the social and psychological causes of the massacre  (5) a discussion of post-traumatic stress disorders (6) a delineation of commemorating activities (7) an account of the lawsuits by survivors and the relatives of victims against Germany for punitive justice and compensation (8) a description of the role of Greek and German NGOs in the survivors’ struggle for justice and (9) suggestions for  resolving the legal conflict and exploitation of the mass tragedy for the purpose of prevention, peace and reconciliation.”
